OBiBa Apps Selected for UK Research Platform

Three OBiBa applications have been selected by the Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) in the United Kingdom for integration into its translational research platform. The Leicester BRU is part of a multi-million pound program to prevent, diagnose and treat ill-health. It is one of 16 BRUs around England that focus on translational research. The Leicester BRU's software platform is known as the Biomedical Research Informatics Centre for Cardiovascular Science (BRICCS). BRICCS will save precious time by leveraging existing clinical data for research purposes. BRICCS developers are working with OBiBa and two other international projects to use open source clinical research tools within the BRICCS platform.

Onyx, OBiBa's data collection and patient interview tool will be one of the first components integrated into BRICCS. Two other OBiBa applications, Opal and GenoByte, will be integrated into BRICCS in subsequent phases of development. Opal, OBiBa's federated database will permit repurposing of clinical data for research purposes. Researchers will use Opal to restructure data according to agreed and developing international ontological standards for both clinical and research data. Integration of Opal into BRICCS will be a key step toward data harmonization and sharing. GenoByte is OBiBa's Application Programming Interface (API) for genomic analysis. GenoByte will be the component underlying BRICCS analysis of high-throughput genotyping experiments across many subjects.
